Miranda makes a vigorous case for these unfamiliar melodious and difficult Caprices. Paganini was an influence, however the 19th-century Italian cello virtuoso employed harmonic patterns that reach back to Bach, and he was not afraid also to offer operatic melodies. The close recording captures immediacy, including Miranda’s whispering tones in high tenor passages.
